Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT6 sales saw 7,155 deliveries during the fourth quarter, marking its sixth quarter of availability in the United States market. The vehicle’s sales volume remained stable despite complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Q4 2020 performance puts the three-row luxury crossover in eighth place in its competitive set of nine vehicles in terms of overall sales volume, falling two places compared to Q3 2020. The segment was led by the BMW X5 and X6 duo delivering a combined 21,523 sales, followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class in second with 15,994 sales. The Acura MDX took third, followed by the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave in fourth (see running Buick Enclave sales), the Volvo XC90 in fifth (see running Volvo XC90 sales), followed by the Audi Q7 (see running Audi Q7 sales) in sixth, and the Lincoln Aviator (see running Lincoln Aviator sales) in seventh. The XT6 followed in eighth, only outselling the Infiniti QX60.

The premium/luxury luxury three-row crossover segment (lux crossover E-segment) contracted nearly 1 percent to 105,232 units in Q4 2020, meaning that the XT6’s performance was in line with the segment average.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of the competitive landscape, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (a space occupied by the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RX L, which competes with the three-row luxury models, such as the XT6. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also including the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct XT5 and XT6 rivals, respectively.

TOTAL -0.70% 66,883 67,354 -3.67% 204,713 212,508

Combining XT6 and XT5 sales nets Cadillac 18,105 deliveries, slightly more than half of the impressive 34,808 units recorded by the Lexus RX family. Meanwhile, the Aviator and Nautilus gives Lincoln 13,970 combined deliveries.

The Cadillac Society Take

Cadillac XT6 sales were 906 units higher during Q4 2020 compared to Q3 2020, enabling the XT6 to gain somewhat of a foothold in the segment during a relatively short time on the market, despite relatively limited availability and an ultra-competitive segment. Though the XT6 is one of the least popular models in the segment, we would still characterize Cadillac’s performance as solid, especially given that most of its rivals, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Acura and Lexus, are well-established and deeply-rooted in the space.

We remain interested in seeing how the three-row luxury CUV performs throughout the 2021 year. To that end, the 2021 XT6 gains a new base trim level called Luxury that delivers a lower starting price point while bringing the XT6 in line with the Cadillac Y-trim level strategy that has been utilized on most other Cadillac models.
