2027 Cadillac XT5 Powertrain Remains A Mystery For North America

Although the 2027 Cadillac XT5 has been unofficially confirmed for the U.S. market, details on the second-generation model are still sparse. We know that it’ll still ride on an iterated version of the C1 platform as the first-get model, and that it’ll carry over quite a bit of hardware as well.

While the vehicle and its powertrain have not yet been announced, we believe there are three possibilities for the latter:

  1. The same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (production code LSY) found under the hood of the outgoing model,
  2. A mild hybrid variant of the aforementioned turbo-four, or
  3. A newer turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder (production code LK0)

We wouldn’t be surprised to see the luxury marque simply carry over the same powertrain found in the current model. For reference, the 2025 XT5 offers 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque from the turbo four-cylinder engine. A naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter V6 (production code LGX) is optional, however, this engine is on its way of being phased out by Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors.

If Cadillac makes the switch to the mild hybrid variant of the 2.0-liter, the XT5 will certainly become more efficient on the gas. To clarify, this setup would pair the turbo 2.0-liter I-4 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

If it were up to us, we’d implement the third option and go with the 2.5-liter turbo-four. This new four-banger puts out an impressive 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque in vehicles that share the XT5’s C1 platform. Specifically, that’s 18 more ponies and 55 pound-feet more twist than the 3.6L V6.

We expect Cadillac to announce more details on the upcoming XT5 in the near future. Until then, which setup would you prefer? Let us know in the comment below.

  1. Having driven several V6 engines in GM vehicles, I prefer that 3.6 L V6 if I had the choice. I sant long term durability, not power or economy.

  3. My 2024 XT6 Prem, Lux Platinum has the 3.6 L V6 as did my 2017 and 2021 XT5s. It provides adequate performance and gets decent gas mileage. My XT6 is averaging 19.6 MPG. Pretty hard to complain about that in a 6 passenger SUV.

  4. I am planning on buying the ‘27 version, but I will not if it has a 4 cylinder. I’ll go to Lexus, BMW or Acura. I don’t see the 4 cylinder engines lasting very long.

    • You obviously don’t know anything about Lexus then. RX is only available with a turbo 4, or 4 cyl hybrid.

  5. I’ve had three XT5 and one XT6 all with the 3.6 v-6 and they run great. That’s the engine I want in my future GM cars.

  6. The 3.6L LGX V6 is well suited to a vehicle the size of the XT5. It is smooth and spirited with a 9 or 10 speed transmission while requiring regular fuel. The turbo engines all require premium fuel driving the cost per mile much higher than the V6 drinking regular.

    • Plus, large displacement 4-cylinder motors are not known for their finesse, being rather coarse in operation. It may work well in a pickup truck application, but in a luxury SUV?

      • nah not even in a pickup truck it works well, a small car is best for those motors

  7. I prefer the v-6 that I have in my 2020 xt6 with cylinder de-activation and ability to switch to front-wheel drive. Howvever, I had the mild hybrid 4 in a 2007 Saturn Vue and liked it.

  10. GM should keep the 3.6 V6 because the 4 cylinder in an XT5 would be noisy. It seems GM can’t make a quiet 4cyl. The XT4 we have has engine noise that is not acceptable for a Cadillac.

  11. I definitely would want the 3.6 V6 engine. I have had that engine in my last 3 Cadillac’s. A four-cylinder engine does not appeal to me at all. I probably would not buy another Cadillac if that was all they offered.

  12. As a current 2017 XT5 owner I am on board to buy the 2027 XT5 but only if it is available in a six cylinder. I like the performance and quietness of my current engine and expect the same from future vehicle.

  13. If GM is listening to their customers, they should see that the prevailing preference for the V6 is obvious. Forget what Lexus is doing with just 4 cylinder offerings. Keeping a V6 option would win over many of those Lexus customers. After all, his is a premium luxury marque, please listen to your customers. These message is LOUD & CLEAR, keep the V6!
