Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

Cadillac CT5 sales kept the model towards the bottom of the segment during Q3 2020 in the U.S. market. The new sedan was outsold by seven new rivals, but outsold two others.

The segment was led by BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz in first, second, and third best-selling spots, respectively. The BMW 3 Series and 4 Series together accounted for a segment-leading 12,070 sales. The Audi A4 and A5 came in second place with 9,676 combined deliveries, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class saw 7,215 deliveries. From there, the Acura TLX saw 5,707 deliveries, combined Volvo S60/V60 sales totaled 5,677 units, combined sales of the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 totaled 4,457 units, and the Lexus IS and RC saw a combined 4,381 units.

The Cadillac CT5 saw 4,001 deliveries. Adding the 17 units of the discontinued ATS gives Cadillac a combined 4,018 deliveries in the segment. The Genesis G70 saw 2,732 deliveries. The Alfa Romeo Giulia brought up last place with 2,192 deliveries.

The luxury D-sedan segment saw cumulative sales contract 9 percent to 58,125 units during the third quarter of 2020.

The Cadillac Society Take

The Cadillac CT5 was outsold by most rivals during the third quarter of 2020, a circumstance we attribute to the following two complications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic:

  1. Sub-par supply at the dealer level as a result of production downtime at the Lansing Grand River plant, preventing dealers from selling the vehicle to interested customers, and
  2. Lack of market awareness of the CT5, a brand new nameplate in the segment. By comparison, most segment contenders have substantially more established offerings from a name recognition and awareness standpoints.

Despite these two issues, Q3 2020 sales were 1,426 units higher than the 2,575 sales in Q2 2020 and 1,001 units higher than the 3,000 sales in Q1 2020. As a result, CT5 sales are growing, and we expect sales to increase substantially in the coming quarters as both inventory and consumer awareness of the model improve, enabling the new Caddy to obtain a substantially more favorable position in the segment.
