From a segment share standpoint, Cadillac XT5 sales accounted for just 3 percent segment share, down 4 percentage points.
The RX accounted for 24 percent segment share, up 2 percentage points, followed by the X3 with 18 percent share, also up 2 percentage points. The GLC-Class earned an 11 percent share, down 1 percentage point, while the MDX remained steady at 10 percent share. The Q5 took 8 percent share, down 6 percentage points, while the XC60 remained flat at 8 percent. The Nautilus held 5 percent share, up 1 percentage point, while the GV70 earned 4 percent. The XT5 followed with 3 percent, while the Stelvio and the QX50 both accounted for 2 percent segment share.
Overall, the luxury D-crossover segment contracted 19 percent to 122,602 units in Q4 2021, meaning that the 68 percent drop in XT5 sales substantially underperformed the segment. It’s also worth noting that three models overall posted increases in sales volume during the quarter. These were the GV70, X4 and QX50.
It should be noted that Lexus RX sales now include both the two-row RX and three-row RX L. The RX competes directly with the XT5, while the RX L competes with the larger Cadillac XT6. A more apt comparison would be to compare RX sales to that of both the XT5 and XT6.

Like many other models from Cadillac and across the greater automobile industry, Cadillac XT5 sales suffered dramatically in the fourth quarter of 2021 due to idled production throughout the 2021 calendar year. In the case of the XT5, production resumed in full at the Cadillac Spring Hill plant on December 6th, 2021 after being down for several months as the luxury automaker grappled with the ongoing global microchip shortage. This negatively impacted XT5 inventory at the dealer level, therefore negatively affecting sales.
Production of the XT5 is currently at full capacity, and we expect sales to reflect the increased supply of the luxury crossover as more units land at dealerships. It’s worth noting that the XT5 is due for a heavy update for the 2023 model year, which should, in turn, help the vehicle become more attractive in its competitive packed segment.
