Cadillac parent company, General Motors, has filed to trademark Optiq, Cadillac Society has learned. The automaker opted to file two separate trademark applications, one for ‘Cadillac Optiq’ and one for simply ‘Optiq’.
Filed on November 30th, 2021 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), both trademark applications were filed on November 30th with the USPTO, and list a Goods and Services category of “Electric land vehicles, namely automobiles.” The Cadillac Optiq application is assigned serial number 97148367 while the Optiq application carries serial number 97148341.
The automaker initially filed a trademark application for the Optiq name back in July of 2020, as previously reported by Cadillac Society. However, in May of 2021, we uncovered that the Optiq application had been abandoned, potentially indicating that Cadillac was no longer interested in pursuing the name. However, that seems to no longer be the case, and the Cadillac Optiq name is likely destined for an upcoming electric vehicle.
Optiq falls in line with Cadillac’s naming convention for electric vehicles, in which all model names end in an “iq” suffix, such as the Lyriq and Celestiq. Other recent trademark filings for future EV names include Vistiq, Lumistiq and Ascendiq, as well as Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL.
In a 2020 interview, the head of Cadillac’s global brand strategy, Phil Dauchy, explained to Cadillac Society Executive Editor, Alex Luft, that the “iq” suffix “signals that Cadillac is bringing a different type of vehicle to market, one that works in concert with man, nature and machine.”
Last year, the automaker also filed a trademark application for the name Symboliq. However, similarly to the original Optiq filing, the application was abandoned. So far, it’s not clear if the luxury marque will renew efforts to secure rights to the Symboliq name.
