The luxury D-crossover segment expanded 6 percent to 155,310 units in Q4 2020, meaning that XT5 sales underperformed the segment average.
We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the three-row RX L being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

The Cadillac Society Take
Cadillac XT5 sales underperformed the segment average during the fourth quarter of 2020. We attribute the circumstance to increased competition in what has quickly become one of the most contested luxury vehicle segments in the world. It’s also possible that XT5 sales slipped due to internal competition from two other Cadillac models – the XT4 and XT6.
Going forward, Cadillac will need to continue battling it out with new and established rivals in the luxury D-crossover space. The segment is about to get even more competitive with a new entry in the form of the 2022 Genesis GV70. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Company is currently in the process of launching the all-new Acura MDX. Cadillac is plotting to overhaul the XT5 around 2023 model year with a new model based on the same architecture. Until then, barring any substantial incentives, we expect sales of the current model to continue at roughly the same levels as in Q4 2020.

If Cadillac wants to increase its sales of its crossovers dramatically and quickly, they better get moving on rolling out their “super cruise” on these models. There are many people who drive US Interstate highways waiting for this capability. Assignment for Cadillac Society: Find out definitely when SC will be offered as an option on crossovers. PS, I am in the market for an XT5 as a replacement for my original owner 2011 Buick Enclave CXL2 which I love dearly but won’t buy a replacement without the SC. Get with it GM!
