Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Following the 56 percent sales drop in Q3 2020 spurred by a lack of inventory at the retail level, the rebound in Cadillac Escalade sales during the fourth quarter represents a strong performance for the marque’s flagship utility. As such, the Escalade remains the best-selling model in the full-size luxury SUV segment, with a controlling 45 percent segment share. That means that the Escalade almost outsold all rivals combined, including:

  • Lincoln Navigator (see running Lincoln Navigator sales), which came in second place with 5,042 deliveries for a 24 percent segment share
  • Infiniti QX80, which took third place with 4,832 deliveries for a 23 percent segment share
  • Lexus LX, which came in last place with 1,636 deliveries for a 9 percent segment share

The full-size luxury SUV segment expanded 1.6 percent to 20,964 units in Q4 2020, meaning that the 6 percent growth in Escalade sales outperformed the segment average. In fact, the Escalade’s performance represented the second-largest sales increase of all models in the segment, second only to the slow-selling Lexus offering.

Below, we’ve included sales figures for full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW  X7, though Audi is rumored to be working a future Q9.

The Cadillac Society Take

In addition to experiencing a healthy 6 percent growth, the Escalade nearly outsold all of its direct rivals on a combined basis during Q4 2020. We attribute the solid performance to strong interest in the all-new, 2021 Escalade. However, inventory at the dealer level was extremely limited during the time frame, meaning that sales could have been even higher.

Once supply begins to stabilize, we fully expect Escalade sales to recover, and in a big way. In fact, we have reason to believe that the all-new model will extend its leadership position in the segment, with a 50 percent segment share not being out of the realm of possibilities.
