The BMW duo of the X5 and X6 continued to dominate the luxury E-segment utilities segment with an impressive 21,861 combined sales, up 1.57 percent. These were followed by the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class in second with 17,495 sales, up 9 percent year-over-year. Third place went to the Acura MDX despite a 20 percent decrease in sales to 12,243 units. The Cadillac XT6’s corporate cousin, the Buick Enclave, experienced a 30 percent decline to 8,626 sales, placing fifth in the segment. It was followed by the Volvo XC90 in sixth with 8,560 sales, down 27 percent. The Lincoln Aviator took seventh with 5,450 units, down 25 percent, while the Audi Q7 barely outsold the XT6 with 3,021 units, down 65 percent. The XT6 placed ninth with 2,940 units, and the segment was rounded out by the Infiniti QX60, which sold 1,455 units as the Japanese luxury brand launched an all-new generation of the model.

From a segment share standpoint, Cadillac XT6 took 4 percent share, down 3 percentage points. The two BMW entries accounted for a combined 27 percent share, and the GLE-Class took 21 percent share. It was followed closely by the MDX with 15 percent. The Enclave and XC90 posted 11 and 10 percent shares, respectively, while the Aviator accounted for 7 percent. The Audi Q7 had a 4 percent segment share while the QX60 had just 2 percent.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment (lux crossover E-segment) contracted nearly 20 percent to 81,651 units in Q4 2021, meaning that XT6 sales significantly underperformed the segment.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of the competitive landscape, below we’ve provided sales figures for the Lexus RX . Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (a space occupied by the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RX L, which competes with the three-row luxury models like the XT6. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more appropriate comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also including the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct XT5 and XT6 rivals, respectively.

Doing so gives Cadillac a combined 6,468 deliveries of the XT5 and XT6, substantially less than the 30,695 sales of the RX family (RX and RX L).

The Cadillac Society Take

We attribute the substantial Cadillac XT6 sales drop to a severe lack of XT6 inventory at the dealer level as a result of the ongoing global microchip shortage. In fact, XT6 production was idled at the Cadillac Spring Hill Plant in late August 2021 and did not resume until October. When production did resume, it was for the 2022 model year.

Currently, production is in full swing for 2022 XT6 models. We expect Cadillac XT6 sales to increase as production remains at full capacity, filling pent-up demand for the luxury crossover. However, while new units of the XT6 are rolling off the assembly line, certain feature are being withheld from the luxury crossover. These include heated and ventilated seats as well as heated steering wheels. Some experts predict that the microchip shortage could last well into 2022, albeit easing in the second half of the year.

  1. You can’t sell what you don’t advertise…That’s why the CTS and the CT6 died. Both GREAT cars, but never advertised. Most people didn’t know they existed. I can’t tell you how many times people have come up to my wife in a parking lot asked what kind of car she was driving and said it was beautiful. When she responded, its a Cadillac, CT6. The reaction was shock.

    • I challenge that.

You actually CAN sell what you don’t advertise. See Tesla (tiny advertising budget, healthy sales).

Instead, the phrase I would use in the case of the XT6 is… “you can’t sell what you don’t have.”

In the case of the XT6, the problem is not advertising. The vehicle is advertised plenty. The problem is with availability, pure and simple, as production was down for a while during 2021.

As for the CT6, the car enjoyed healthy sales. The CTS did as well. The CT6 replaced the CTS, but was dropped as a result of plant allocation challenges and the EV/AV push.

  2. Thank you Frank.
Agreed! Never saw the beautiful CT6 advertised ANYWHERE, except in a Bruno Mars video.
Also, went to a Cadillac/Chevrolet dealership awhile back to look at a XT4 and were ushered to the back lot – where there was one!! So it would also be nice to see in person the different variations and models that are available.

  3. Certainly, marketing has been a weak point for Cadillac for some time, now. Certain products get strong marketing support (looking at you, Lyriq), while others are left to fend for themselves. ATS had a brief flurry of videos and other promotional activity when it was first launched, but not much after that. How many people missed what I enjoy with my 2016 premium coupe?

  4. Tried to buy a CT6 in October. Couldn’t find one with with 4 wheel drive and premium luxury. For the life of my I can’t figure out why Cadillac does not offer SuperCruise in XT5, XT6. Its the one option that separates them from the market and they don’t advertise it.

I have a CTB, albeit a 3.0TT due to not being able to find a Blackwing non V since I wanted SuperCruise. EVERYONE who rides in that car says whow, what kind of cart is this. SuperCruise blows their mind. The CT^ Balckwing is a world class car that sets the bar. EVERY review was a raving review.

So what does Cadillac do?? Quits making them. Has anyone in Cadillac heard of a loss leader that sets the standard?? Use to be their motto. “Setting the Standard of the World”. Anyone remember that?
