Second-Gen Cadillac XT5 Might Make It To North America After All

Cadillac originally planned to discontinue the Cadillac XT5 in the North American market after the current, first-generation model ran out its lifecycle. Meanwhile, the all-new, second-gen XT5 would be offered exclusively in China. However, Cadillac Society recently learned that this might no longer be the case.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Cadillac is currently reevaluating its decision to not offer the second-gen Cadillac XT5 in North America. Previously, Mark Reuss, president of Cadillac parent company, General Motors, stated that the gasoline-powered XT5 didn’t have much of a future outside of China as the luxury marque eyes its transition to an all-electric brand. It’s worth noting that, from what we know, a decision to bring the second-gen XT5 stateside has yet to be made, but there is a team within the automaker that’s been tasked with exploring such a move.

As such, the luxury marque would position the electric Cadillac Lyriq and recently-announced Cadillac Optiq as indirect successors to the XT5. However, sales of the Lyriq have left quite a bit to be desired, moving just 5,334 units throughout the first three quarters of 2023 in the U.S.. During the same timeframe, the XT5 sold over 20,000 units. The primary reason for the low sales volume of the Lyriq is production pains, as GM is still workin on scaling up production, hoping to reach full production rates during mid-2024.

Cadillac Society  has already spotted several prototypes of the second-gen Cadillac XT5 undergoing testing. While the finer points of its exterior design have been thus far heavily camouflaged, we have been able to pick out its vertically-oriented placeholder headlights, suggesting a look similar to that of the refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4. A glimpse through its front windows reveals that it will feature a large curved display, likely the same unit used in the Lyriq and 2024 XT4.
