Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, has announced a $500 million investment in its Arlington plant in Arlington, Texas, where the Cadillac Escalade is currently built. This new investment will aid GM in the production of its next generation of internal combustion engine SUVs.
With this sizable investment, the Cadillac Arlington plant will be outfitted with new tooling and equipment in its stamping, body shop and general assembly areas. This, in turn, will allow the luxury marque to ramp up production of the Cadillac Escalade to keep up with demand for the full-size luxury SUV.
“Today we are announcing plans for a significant investment in Arlington to strengthen our industry-leading full-size SUV business,” said Gerald Johnson, executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability at General Motors. “Preparing the plant to produce future ICE full-size SUVs reflects our commitment to our valued customers and the efforts of the dedicated Arlington Assembly employees, who have been breaking production records this year.”
In a statement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said, “For more than half a century, Arlington Assembly has played an integral role in the economic success of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metroplex.”
He added, “General Motors’ over half-a-billion-dollar investment in their North Texas assembly plant will strengthen Texas’ position as a global manufacturing leader and continue creating good-paying jobs for generations of Texans. I thank General Motors for continuing to invest in our state’s diverse, highly skilled workforce and look forward to maintaining the strong partnership between this great company and the State of Texas.”
The Arlington plant has received nearly $2 billion in investments since 2013. However, it’s important to note that the most recent investment will facilitate the production of the ICE-powered Escalade, and is not related to the assembly of the forthcoming electric Escalade IQ. Rather, the Cadillac Escalade IQ will likely be built at the Factory Zero plant – previously known as the Detroit-Hamtramck plant – in Michigan.
