There are currently two options for those who are in the market for a top-notch luxury performance vehicle from Cadillac: the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing. Enthusiasts can’t complain about these marvelous machines. However, what about shoppers who are after a Cadillac Blackwing with electric power? Well, according to Lyriq-V lead development engineer Alex Doss, there are two main obstacles preventing the automaker from brining such a product to market: excessive weight and limited demand.
In a recent interview with The Drive, Doss explained that vehicles like the Lyriq-V and Optiq-V are doable because they’re able to offer an engaging driving experience. A Blackwing model, however, would have to offer top tier track performance, and that simply isn’t feasible with today’s technology.
Doss also says the demand for such vehicles is virtually non-existent. So, even if engineers were to solve the weight issue by accelerating the development of next-generation solid-state batteries, the luxury marque would struggle to make a business case for battery-powered Blackwing models. It’s at this point that remind our readers that current-gen Blackwing sedans represent a relatively low percentage of Cadillac’s total sales.
For reference, Cadillac sold less than 6,000 units of the CT4 sedan in the U.S. in 2025, and that includes the entire model range, not just Blackwings. Comparatively, nearly 16.5K units of the CT5 sedan was sold during that same time frame. Meanwhile, Lyriq sales totaled over 9,300 units, and Escalade sales tallied 24,375 units.
That said, Cadillac still seriously considers the future of its performance vehicles, which is good news for enthusiasts, as it means there’s more to look forward to. The luxury marque has already hinted at the future with the likes of the Elevated Velocity Crossover Concept and Opulent Velocity Concept.
What’s more, the Lyriq-V may not be a Blackwing, but it’s still the quickest-ever production Cadillac vehicle. Between that and the current Blackwing sedans, consider us satiated.
