Owners may be one step closer to solving a front footwell water leak that has been plaguing some Cadillac Optiq crossovers. Reports on social media state that the issue may be caused by one of two things: a loose air-conditioning (A/C) drain tube, or a gap in the body seam sealer beneath the passenger-side carpet.
The A/C drain tube is more likely to be the culprit. As the name implies, this component routes condensation from the Optiq’s HVAC system to the bottom of the vehicle. This is why you often see water on the ground beneath your vehicle when A/C is running on a hot summer day. However, if the drain tube somehow becomes loose and/or disconnected, then the moisture may drip directly into the front passenger footwell area.
If the drain tube is properly seated, then the body seam sealer could be the issue, though this manufacturing defect is less likely to be the case. That said, a seal just beneath the passenger-side front carpet could certainly allow water intrusion. Compared to the drain tube, diagnosing the seal is much more labor intensive.
In order to access and inspect the seal, technicians have to clear quite a bit of hardware out of the way, including the front passenger seat, door sill trim, carpet, and the Brake Electronic Control Module (BECM) – and that’s just what’s on the inside. Down below, techs will also need to remove the underbody panel and drive unit from underneath the vehicle. If water intrusion is present during testing, then technicians will clean the area and apply a fresh layer of sealant.
Now, a little water inside the cabin of your Cadillac Optiq may not sound like a major cause for concern, however, it will almost certainly lead to a musty odor and, if left untreated, mold. As such, Cadillac techs are advised to inspect nearby interior components to ensure that no moisture is trapped anywhere it shouldn’t be, such as the carpet padding or sound insulation. In some cases, these parts may need to be replaced.
Of course, any work related to this issue will be covered under the Optiq’s factory warranty. So, if you noticed any strange smells after running the A/C or wet weather conditions, we recommend taking your vehicle to your local Cadillac dealer for inspection. For reference, the issue seems to be specific to 2025 Optiq models.
