We previously touched on Cadillac’s plans to launch an SAE Level 3 autonomous driving system in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the upcoming “eyes-off” driving feature.
As a reminder, the SAE Level 3 designation signifies that this autonomous driving system would be entirely hands-off, meaning the vehicle would be completely in command, though the driver must be prepared to retake controls. This capability is achieved by building off of current Super Cruise technology and utilizing a combinator of lidar, radar, and cameras.
The idea behind this multi-sensor approach was highlighted by Sterling Anderson, GM’s executive vice president of global product. “The evolutionary analog doesn’t work here… Why do we have multiple modes? And why have we somehow managed to fuse them,” Anderson said. “And you don’t think you can fuse LiDAR, radar, and camera?”
Of course, this is just the next step in the automaker’s journey to building fully autonomous vehicles. This sentiment expressed by Baris Cetinok, GM’s senior vice president of software and services, who noted, “Human intervention should not be the escape hatch for sudden incidents.”
In conjunction with autonomous driving, Cadillac is poised to roll out software-defined vehicles, which offer other services. According to Anders, this ambition is, “about removing unnecessary sources of friction from your life.” This includes a new centralized computing platform, which will also debut in the Cadillac Escalade IQ and is expected to provide a massive leap in capability with “10 times more over-the-air software update capacity, 1,000 times more bandwidth, and up to 35 times more AI performance for autonomy.”
As previously reported, Cadillac is also integrating Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Cadillac infotainment systems starting in 2026. Further down the road, the luxury marque and its parent, General Motors, plan to introduce their own proprietary AI, which will incorporate other systems, including Super Cruise and OnStar.
