Cadillac XT4 To Be Discontinued After 2025 Model Year

The Cadillac XT4 is not long for this world, as Cadillac’s parent, General Motors, has announced that production of the compact luxury crossover will end at the Fairfax plant in Kansas in January 2025.

The decision is surprising for various reasons. First, it means that the refreshed XT4 will have only been available for two model years (2024 and 2025) – a relatively short time for an updated product. Additionally, it also means that GM had an about-face over the past few months. Earlier this year, the automaker said that XT4 production will be temporarily paused at the Fairfax facility to retool it for production of the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV.

“Fairfax will produce both the Bolt EV and XT4 on the same assembly line, which gives GM flexibility to respond to changes in customer demand,” a GM spokesman said in May 2024. Now, plans have changed and XT4 production will not resume in late 2025 as originally planned.

“General Motors is confident in our strong ICE and EV portfolio and will lean into growth opportunities guided by customer demand,” a GM spokesperson told Automotive News in a statement. “There is no change to our previously announced $391 million investment and staffing plans at Fairfax Assembly. This facility will continue to play a critical role in GM’s future with the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.”

The Cadillac XT4 made its debut for the 2019 model year, joining the larger XT5 which, at the time, was Cadillac’s only crossover. A mid-cycle refresh for the 2024 model year was headlined by a new front end along with Cadillac’s curved 33-inch display. The XT4’s indirect successor is the 2025 Cadillac Optiq – the luxury marque’s smallest and most affordable electric crossover. Deliveries of the Optiq should begin shortly before production of the XT4 ends.

XT4 sales have been far from class-leading, placing seventh in its segment of ten when ranked by sales volume for the first nine months of 2024. Sales have decrease 12 percent to 16,688 units. Sales of the segment-leading Lexus NX improved 3.5 percent to 53,512 units.

Cadillac Optiq

Though not explicitly announced, we expect the Cadillac XT4 to continue being produced and made available in China, with the model’s North American discontinuation not having any impact on that model.

  1. I think Cadillac is making a mistake. I don’t think the near term EV sales is going to be as robust as they think. There are still too many obstacles for the USA to go all electric. The biggest obstacle being they are just not ready to match the way we drive. I think I will hold onto my XT5.

  2. Big mistake! Due to limited garage space which means I have to have a vehicle that is of a certain length. I will never have an electric vehicle so I will be looking at the Lincoln Corsair!

  3. I was about to order a new XT-4, but I’m changing to an XT-5 now. Even that is going away after the 2025 model year. GM’s all-electric plan is going to leave many of us without choice in the future. I’m baffled why GM management think their customers are so keen on EVs, which are ultra heavy, not conducive to driving on long trips and expensive to buy.

    • I was planning on buying an XT4, but definitely not now! GM thinks they can force customers to buy their EV cars, but it’s not happening! I’m looking at the Lincoln Corsair or the Lexus NX!

  4. I’ve owned Cadillacs for 40 yrs. I’am not an EV guy. I’am disappointed with GM, they refreshed two gas powered suv’s GT4 and XT5 but sent them to China, not for sale in USA. I guess I’ll have to look elsewhere!

  9. i’m glad I read this. My wife had just expressed a desire to have a XT4. Prior to April 2024, I had only owned Lexus since 1998.

I bought a CT5V Blackwing in April, so that should tell the world what I think about EVs. I live in Louisiana and they can’t keep the power to my house, especially when storms come..

    • Very disappointed. Leased a 2024 XT4 and love it . It is surprising after the 2024 refresh. Would have never leased it if the knew it was going away.
