When properly equipped, the 2024 Cadillac XT5 is capable of towing slightly less than its own curb weight. Below, Cadillac Society provides a detailed breakdown of the towing capacities for the luxury crossover.
Before we get into the details, we need to take a quick look at the drivetrain options for the 2024 XT5. Buyers can choose between two engines: the turbocharged 2.0L I4 engine (production code LSY) with 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, or the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 engine (production code LGX) with 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. Both engine options are paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission as standard, and front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on Luxury and Premium Luxury, while all-wheel drive (AWD) is available as an option on those trims, and standard on Sport.
More specific to towing, the 2024 Cadillac XT5 can be outfitted with the optional Smart Towing Package (production code V92), which is offered on Premium Luxury and Sport trims. With all that in mind, let’s dive into the 2024 XT5 towing capacities.
2024 Cadillac XT5 Towing Capacities
Model | Drivetrain | Turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY | 3.6L V6 LGX
Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg) | Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg)
Luxury | FWD | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - |
Luxury | AWD | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - |
Premium Luxury | FWD | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 |
Premium Luxury with V921 | FWD | - | - | 3.49 | 3,500 / 1,588 |
Premium Luxury | AWD | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 |
Premium Luxury with V921 | AWD | - | - | 3.49 | 3,500 / 1,588 |
Sport | AWD | - | - | 3.47 | 1,000 / 454 |
Sport with V921 | AWD | - | - | 3.49 | 3,500 / 1,588 |
The base XT5 Luxury is rated to tow 1,000 pounds max, regardless of drivetrain, as this trim cannot be equipped with the Smart Towing Package. Similarly, the Premium Luxury and Sport trims are each rated to tow 1,000 pounds without this optional package. However, opting for the package bumps the luxury crossover’s towing capacity to 3,500 pounds. These figures are exactly the same as those of the 2023 XT5.
It’s also critical to note that Cadillac recommends that drivers don’t tow with their XT5 during the first 500 miles (800 kilometers) of vehicle use in order to prevent damage to the engine, axles, or other components. Drivers are also are advised to perform an oil change before heavy towing, to not drive over 50 mph (80 km/h), and to not make full-throttle starts during the first 500 miles (800 kilometers) of trailer towing. Finally, the XT5 is fully capable of towing in Drive, but if the driver feels that the transmission downshifts too often for their liking, they can manually select a lower gear by using the manual mode.
There are also quite a few features and technologies that should be deactivated before pulling a trailer with the 2024 Cadillac XT5, including:
- Park Assist
- Reverse Automatic Braking
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Rear Cross Traffic Braking
- Lane Change Alert
- Adaptive Cruise Control (unless the vehicle is equipped with trailering functionality)
- Super Cruise (does not apply to the XT5, since it’s not offered)
The 2024 XT5 is underpinned by the C1 platform, and is assembled at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee. Moving forward, production of the upcoming 2025 model year is currently scheduled to commence in July 2024. The 2025 model will be a carryover from the 2024 model year, and will not be the all-new second-generation model, whose development Cadillac Society has been following for quite some time now. As of this writing, the next-gen XT5 will be offered exclusively in China.
