In November 2021, Cadillac Society uncovered a slew of trademark applications filed by Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, that followed the luxury marque’s new ‘IQ’ naming convention for its future electric vehicles. One of those applications was for the name Optiq. Now, we’ve discovered that the automaker is not the only company with its sights on snagging the name. Far from it, in fact.
Interestingly, Cadillac already has somewhat of a history when it comes to trademarking the Optiq name. Way back in the summer of 2020, we discovered that the luxury marque had applied for the name with intent to use it for one of its upcoming electric vehicles. Then, almost a year later in May 2021, it seemed that Cadillac had abandoned its efforts for the trademark. Six months later, in November 2021, the luxury marque renewed efforts to trademark Optiq, listing a use case of “Electric vehicles, namely automobiles” in the Goods and Services category of the application.
‘Optiq’ happens to fall right into Cadillac’s new naming convention for its EVs. The application joins several others that were filed around the same time for monikers with similar suffixes, including Ascendiq, Vistiq, Lumistiq, Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL. The fully-electric Cadillac Lyriq is the first Cadillac vehicle with the “iq” suffix , with the upcoming Celestiq flagship sedan following suit.
However, as we mentioned earlier, there are several other companies who want to take the moniker for themselves. For example, Siemens Healthcare GmBH filed a trademark application in 2020 with intent to use the name for a medical software, while Telestream filed in 2019 to use the term for a cloud-based video and audio monitoring software.
To illustrate just how in-demand the Optiq moniker really is, the table below breaks down which companies have applied to trademark the name, what for, and when:
