Chip Ganassi Racing has revealed the livery for the Cadillac DPi-V.R race car it will run in the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.
In an era when race team liveries are often very complex, this one is refreshing. Though not simplistic, it is certainly clean, and makes good use of a generally muted color scheme which includes black, white, several shades of gray and occasional flashes of red.
Colors aside, one of the main features of the design is the use of parallelograms as seen on the Cadillac V-Series logo, contrasting with the rectangles used for the logo on the luxury marque’s less performance-oriented cars. The yellow and blue of that logo did not make it to the race car, though these do appear on the Michelin tire branding. If they had been incorporated into the design, the car might have resembled a Piet Mondrian painting.
Chip Ganassi Racing temporarily left the IMSA scene at the end of 2019 after three seasons running Ford GTs. The team’s return with a Cadillac DPi-V.R was announced late in 2020.
“We are very excited to welcome Chip Ganassi Racing to the Cadillac competition family,” Cadillac VP Rory Harvey said at that time. “Their success across many forms of racing, including sports cars, will be a great addition to our IMSA WeatherTech line-up. Chip’s pedigree at winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona eight times as well as their championships in this form of racing gives Cadillac another stalwart team to compete for the 2021 IMSA DPi championship.”
The Ganassi Cadillac DPi-V.R will be in the hands of two European drivers. One is 28 year old Kevin Magnussen; the seven-year F1 veteran from Denmark who was dropped from the Haas team at the end of the 2021 season but quickly found a home with Ganassi.
The other is 34 year old Renger van der Zande, who is no stranger to the Cadillac DPi-V.R The Dutchman spent the last three seasons driving a similar car for former Cadillac customer team Wayne Taylor Racing.
The first – and longest – of the 12 races in the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship season will be the Rolex 24 Hour race at Daytona International Speedway on January 30th and 31st. Teams will have an opportunity to settle in to the Daytona track during the Road Before The 24, to be held on the weekend of January 22nd to 24th.
It’s also worth noting that Cadillac will air a teaser for its upcoming CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing during the Rolex 24 Hour race on Saturday, January 30th before revealing both super sedans on February 1st, at which point it will open pre-orders for both vehicles.
