Cadillac F1 Team Makes Race Debut At Australian Grand Prix

It’s been a long time coming, but the Cadillac F1 team’s official race debut came and went last week at the Australian Grand Prix. There was plenty of drama at the first race of the season. For starters, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, and Lance Stroll all fell out of contention in the qualifying round. As for Cadillac, its two cars qualified behind all other competitors.

In the end, one of the Cadillac F1 race cars placed 16th while the other failed to finish the race.

Sergio Perez started the race in 18th place and managed to move up two positions before crossing the finish line. At one point Perez was in the thick of it thanks to the safety car coming out (virtually, that is), but was unable to keep pace with competitors who were on fresher rubber. Perez would end up finishing three laps off of first place George Russel. Finishing the first race is a notable feat for a brand-new team, which Perez fully managed.

Unfortunately, the car piloted by Valtteri Bottas failed to do so. Bottas started at the back of the pack in 19th and needed to pit early because of a problem with the steering wheel, and would retire by lap 16 due to a fueling issue.

After the race, Perez reflected on this first outing with reporters from Motorsport.

“The first step is done,” he said. “As a team, completing the race was incredible. It’s a shame Valtteri couldn’t complete it, but overall it was a great one. A great recovery for the weekend, we started with a lot of issues.”

Regarding the No. 11 car Perez piloted, Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon acknowledged the need to quicken its pace. We’re eager to see if they’re able to do so at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix.
