Segment Performance

Cadillac XT5 sales performance places places the crossover in sixth place out of 11 rivals in its competitive set in terms of sales volume, behind the Lexus RX in first place, BMW X3/X4 in second (which made up a combined 22,914 deliveries), Mercedes-Benz GLC in third, Audi Q5 in fourth and Acura MDX in fifth. With  should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX as well as the three-row RXL. While the “regular” RX is a rival to the XT5, the latter competes directly with the new Cadillac XT6.

The XT5 outsold the Volvo XC60, Lincoln Nautilus (previously known as the MKX), Porsche Macan, Infiniti QX50 and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The luxury D-crossover segment expanded 1.64 percent to 153,366 units in Q4 2019.

The Cadillac Society Take

Cadillac XT5 sales underperformed the segment during the fourth quarter of 2019. We posit that this is a result of two particular reasoning.

The first is internal competition from the newer and more affordable Cadillac XT4 as well as the newer XT6. The XT4 saw 8,895 sales while the XT6 saw 7,169 deliveries during the quarter. The circumstance has made us wonder whether the XT5 will remain Cadillac’s best-selling model into the future.

That, however, might be irrelevant, since sales of the Cadillac crossover lineup grew to 27,323 units during the quarter, representing a 30 percent increase year-over-year.

The second reason for reduced XT5 sales is related to reduced availability of the vehicle at the retail level due to the UAW labor strike against Cadillac parent company, General Motors. The strike lasted 40 days and disrupted the manufacturing operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico, plus several other international markets.
