My 2020 XT6 Sport includes smart towing package with 4,000 pound tow limit and 400 pound hitch weight limit. Owners’ manual mentions weight distribution hitch but does not require it or indicate if it raises hitch weight capacity. Please share any experience towing a small travel trailer.

Does your XT6 have a hitch reciever and 7 prong harness from the factory? Asking because we were told ours did and when we checked it did not but my wife also has the smart tow and upgraded engine components.

A weight distribution hitch is recommended to relieve stress on the rear of the vehicle by helping spread the weight through the vehicle to the front. It does not increase the towing capacity of the hitch reciever or the vehicle itself. The reciever will still be rated for usually 4500lbs and the tongue weight for between 400-650 depending on the reciever you have. That being said if you have an aftermarket receiver I would not push that at all. If Cadillac has any indication of towing and you have an engine, transmission, or suspension issue they can void your warranty coverage.

Yes my XT6 Sport has the factory hitch receiver and 7 prong harness included in the smart towing package. It’s a 2020 and the owner’s manual states the tow limit is 4,000 lbs and the hitch weight limit is 400 lbs. It’s easy to find a small travel trailer under 4,000 lbs but not with hitch weight under 400 lbs. It seems to me that a weight distribution hitch would allow more hitch weight, but since I cannot get anyone affiliated with Cadillac to approve that, I won’t be exceeding the 400 limit on the trailer tongue weight. I will not be jeopardizing the vehicle by unapproved towing. Thank you for your response.
