Dealer inventory of the Cadillac XT4 crossover – which was discontinued in January – continues to decrease, and a recent vehicle elevator failure at a Canadian dealership claimed two more brand-new XT4 units in May.
Caused by a broken gear in the winch motor, the elevator failure at Thibault Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC in Sherbrooke, Québec resulted in two Cadillac XT4 crossovers dropping, pressing them against the structural beams of the building. The beams bent under the force of the initial impact and sustained weight of the vehicles, creating a delicate situation, since responders needed to find a way to remove the crossovers without causing further structural damage to the building.
Fortunately, the damage was purely material, with no one at the dealership being hurt or killed. This is somewhat of a miracle since employees were under the elevator operating its controls when it collapsed. Aside from the two luxury crossovers, the dealer’s building suffered structural damage.
According to Jean-Marc Pizzo, the Operations Chief of the Sherbrooke Fire Protection Service, “the goal was to free what is known inside as the ‘curtain wall’ with glass. We managed to break it open and then drop the white car inside the store and then remove it.”
Pizzo and his team – which included an engineer tasked with observing the lifting platform and sounding the alarm if it showed signs of further collapse – managed to get the job done without causing any further damage to the store itself.
Proper functionality of the tiered elevator can be seen in the image below, wherein the white sedan is perched above the red sedan in the part of the building just under the Cadillac logo. In the case of the two Cadillac XT4s, it would appear that the white unit was on the upper level while the black unit was on the ground floor.
The incident reportedly totaled $150,000 CAD in damages, which is roughly $107,600 USD, at current exchange rates. A safety inspector was dispatched to the scene to investigate and determine the official cause of the incident. As far as we know, Thibault’s claim that the failure was due to faulty equipment has yet to be confirmed.
As a reminder, once the remaining XT4 inventory has been fully depleted, buyers will need to look to the luxury marque’s portfolio of battery electric luxury crossovers to meet their needs. This range of products includes the Cadillac Optiq – an indirect successor to the XT4, as well as the larger Lyriq, three-row Vistiq, and Escalade IQ and IQL.
