When regular production began for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade on October 6th, the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist feature was not included in the units being built, Cadillac Society has learned.
Cadillac initially planned to include Super Cruise as standard on the 2022 Escalade on all trims except for the base Luxury model. Then, as the ongoing microchip shortage continued to exert pressure on chip supply, the luxury automobile marque then altered those plans by continuing to offer Super Cruise as an option on Premium Luxury, Premium Luxury Platinum, Sport, and Sport Platinum trim levels of the 2022 Escalade. And now, it seems as though the feature won’t be available at all in the beginning of the new model year, and it’s currently unclear when the feature will become available again.
Cadillac’s Super Cruise is a driver assist feature that enables the driver to take their hands off the wheel during highway driving on certain North American thoroughfares within the United States and Canada. The feature employs the use of a range of onboard sensors and cameras, including visual cameras, LiDar mapping, GPS information and radar to control braking and acceleration while the vehicle is in motion.
Super Cruise is considered a Level 2 assist feature by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, meaning the vehicle can perform functions like lane centering and adaptive cruise control on its own. However, the driver is advised to stay alert behind the wheel in case they need to assume control, as Super Cruise is not a fully autonomous technology.
Super Cruise was first launched on the 2018 Cadillac CT6. Besides the Escalade, it is also offered on the CT4 and CT5 luxury sedans. As of this writing, the technology can be used on nearly 200,000 miles of compatible roads thanks to a recent update that added 70,000 compatible highway miles.
