Cadillac rival, Alfa Romeo, will soon rival the Cadillac XT4 with an upcoming entry of its own called the Tonale, and our spies recently caught the Italian automaker testing a prototype of the Cadillac XT4 rival, giving us an early look of what the XT4 will be up against.
The all-new Tonale represents the second crossover offering by the Italian luxury automaker, the first being the compact Alfa Romeo Stelvio introduced for the 2017 model year that competes with the Cadillac XT5.
Set to be revealed tomorrow, February 8th, the Tonale is expected to be powered by a hybrid powertrain that pairs a 1.3L gasoline-powered engine with a small electric motor and a battery pack. Power from the internal combustion engine will be diverted to the front two wheels, while the electric motor will be connected to the rear wheels for an all-wheel-drive setup. The same drivetrain configuration is currently found in the Tonale’s corporate cousin, the Jeep Renegade 4xe hybrid.
When equipped in the Renegade 4xe, the hybrid powertrain is capable of 235 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. We expect the same setup to produce more power in the Tonale.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale first debuted as a concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Our latest spy shots indicate that the production model’s design closely echoes that of the concept vehicle, featuring a similar roofline, as well as front and rear fascias.
It will certainly be interesting to see how the Tonale stacks up against the Cadillac XT4, along with other subcompact luxury crossovers, when it’s released. The same competitive bracket is already occupied with the XT4’s corporate cousin, the Buick Envision, Audi Q3, BMW X1/X2, Lexus UX, Volvo XC40, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar E-Pace and Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class.
As a reminder, the Cadillac XT4 was introduced for the 2019 model year, representing Cadillac’s first entry into the subcompact luxury crossover segment. Under the hood, it features the luxury marque’s turbocharged 2.0L I4 engine (production code LSY), which makes 238 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
