2021 Cadillac XT4 Launches New Face ID Biometric System In China

Having launched about two years ago, the Cadillac XT4 is getting a few noteworthy updates for the 2021 model year in China. The 2021 Cadillac XT4 represents the third model year of the compact luxury crossover, bringing with it new technologies that seek to improve its competitiveness in order to continue attracting the younger generation of customers in the world’s largest automotive market.

The biggest novelty of the 2021 Cadillac XT4 is an all-new facial recognition system called Face ID that works in unison with the vehicle’s keyless access and vehicle start features. A first for Cadillac, the system uses state-of-the-art hardware installed in the front door frame, which that typically overlays the B-pillar when the door is closed.

The system consists of the following elements:

  • High-definition binocular infrared camera
  • Touch screen (with special protection against the elements)
  • Infrared image processor
  • Adaptive light supplement system

As the driver approaches the 2021 Cadillac XT4, the high-definition touch screen activates automatically by recognizing the proximity of the driver’s mobile phone. Thanks to the aforementioned hardware, the system is capable of performing a facial recognition scan of the driver in any situation, even in extreme weather conditions, thereby offering a reliable and highly-effective vehicle entry experience.

In addition, the new Face ID biometric system also offers fingerprint and password unlocking, both of which work via an integrated fingerprint reader and the touch screen, respectively. Once inside the vehicle, drivers can start the 2021 Cadillac XT4 without having to carry the key on their person.

The system allows up to eight people to be recognized by the vehicle, including one administrator and seven regular-level users, making car sharing easier and more convenient.

Other improvements to the Chinese-market 2021 Cadillac XT4 include the marque’s latest infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay, a revamped voice recognition and command system, as well as many other advanced features. The connectivity improvements are combined with the OnStar telematics service, with high-speed Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2021 Cadillac XT4 will also offer a new Cherry Bomb exterior color, which has a unique glass paint finish.

The 2021 Cadillac XT4 is now available across the Cadillac dealership network in China. The new model year continues to be powered b the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine (production code LSY) rated at a maximum of 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Six trim configurations are offered, with prices as follows:

  • 2021 XT4 Tech: 259,700 CNY ($38,445 USD, at current exchange rates)
  • 2021 XT4 Luxury: 279,700 CNY ($41,410 USD)
  • 2021 XT4 Premium Luxury: 289,700 CNY ($42,885 USD)
  • 2021 XT4 Sport: 309,700 CNY ($44,845 USD)
  • 2021 XT4 Platinum Edition: 352,700 CNY ($52,215)
  • 2021 XT4 Sport Platinum Edition: 391,700 CNY ($57,990 USD)

All of the aforementioned changes and updates are specific to the 2021 Cadillac XT4 for the Chinese market. As of this writing, we’re unsure when (or whether) the Face ID system will make its way to markets outside of China. In fact, of the changes listed above, the only ones that also apply to the 2021 XT4 for North America are the introduction of wireless CarPlay and the addition of a new exterior color called Infrared Tintcoat.
