When Cadillac introduced the XT6 crossover in January 2019, it only discussed two trim levels of the three-row, “midsize-plus” luxury crossover: Premium Luxury and Sport. No mention was made of a Platinum trim, which has historically been Cadillac’s range-topping trim level on luxury-oriented, non V-Series models. But now, we have discovered that buyers will be able to order a Cadillac XT6 Platinum Package.
Based on exclusive information uncovered by Cadillac Society, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 will offer a Platinum Package that includes the following features:
The Cadillac XT6 Platinum Package is assigned production code JSE and is available on all 2020 XT6 trim levels, including Premium Luxury, in either FWD or AWD forms, or Sport, which comes exclusively in AWD.
What’s more, the Cadillac XT6 Platinum Package carries the following requirements:
The discovery of the Cadillac XT6 Platinum Package is noteworthy because Cadillac is no longer treating Platinum as a trim level. Instead, the Platinum package is a standalone options package available on Premium Luxury and Sport models, both of which are part of the Cadillac Y trim level strategy. But the reason that Cadillac is offering Platinum as a package might be even more noteworthy still.
When we asked Cadillac executives about Platinum models at the 2019 New York International Auto Show last month, we were told that many models would offer Platinum as a package instead of a standalone trim level. Doing so allows for increased flexibility, since customers could get the crème de la crème of features on their vehicle, regardless of whether they opt for the Premium Luxury or Sport trim of a particular model.
By comparison, offering Platinum as a trim level locked customers into a trim level that they might not have particularly desired. For instance, customers who prefer the sporty persona of a Sport model while also desiring the range-topping features of that vehicle would not have been able to purchase such a model if Platinum were a trim level, since Platinum models have historically featured bright exterior accents that are more in line with Premium Luxury models.
Hence, Platinum is now a standalone package, and we commend Cadillac for going this route.
One of four new colors for the 2025 model year.
And it now represents the best value in its segment.
