2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Revealed As Cadillac XT4 Rival

Earlier this week, we brought you a preview of the upcoming 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale – a new subcompact luxury crossover that will compete directly with the Cadillac XT4. Now, the Italian marque has officially pulled the wraps off Tonale, and we’re here to give you the details.

The Tonale will be available with two powertrain configurations. The first is a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine, which is capable of producing 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The second option is a plug-in hybrid electric setup that pairs a turbocharged 1.3L four-cylinder internal combustion engine with a 90kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle, connected to a 15.5 kWh battery pack and six-speed automatic transmission. This setup is rated at 272 horsepower and offers approximately 30 miles of purely electric driving range.

Inside, the Alfa Romeo Tonale features an infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and 12.3 inch driver information display. As one would expect of a modern infotainment system, it is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while also being capable of over-the-air updates via Alfa Connect.

The subcompact luxury crossover also features a host active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection, driver attention assist, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning with lane keep assist.

Three trim levels are available for the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale, starting with the base Sprint, mid-tier Ti, and range-topping Veloce. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but we expect it to start between $35,000 and $40,000, which would make its price point competitive with other vehicles occupying the same segment, such as the Cadillac XT4, which starts $36,990.

While the Cadillac XT4 doesn’t currently offer a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain, it does feature the marque’s turbocharged 2.0L I4 gasoline engine (production code LSY), which puts out 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This setup is slightly less powerful than the four-cylinder internal combustion engine offered in the Tonale, so it will certainly be interesting to observe how the Cadillac offering ultimately stacks up against the new Italian crossover.

It’s also worth noting that the XT4 is expected to receive a midcycle enhancement (refresh) for the 2023 model year that will bring about updated exterior styling and several enhancements to the cabin, amongst other things.
