Cadillac racing teams fell short of the win at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona on Sunday, January 30th, 2022. The best-finishing Cadillac DPi-V.R was the third-place No. 5 machine fielded by JDC Miller MotorSports and driven by Tristan Vautier, Richard Westbrook and Ben Keating. Meanwhile, the No. 31 Whelen Racing DPi-V.R of Pipo Derani, Tristan Nunez, and Mike Conway took fourth.
Similarly to the one-and-a-half-hour qualifying race run the previous week, the Cadillac racing teams attempted to chase down the dominating Acura race cars. The No. 60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-05 of Helio Castroneves, Tom Blomqvist, Oliver Jarvis and Simon Pagenaud finished first overall, followed by the No. 10 Acura ARX-05 driven by Ricky Taylor, Alex Rossi, Felipe Albuquerque and Will Stevens in second place.
Though they could not ultimately best the Acura race cars, the Nos. 5 and 31 machines battled back and forth for the lead as the 24-hour long haul wore into the night. Despite some trouble mid-race, the No. 60 Acura stalked the two Cadillacs, searching for an opportunity to steal the lead. Eventually, the pass was made, with the No. 10 Acura slipping through the gap as well, and the duo never looked back as Cadillac teams fought to hold down third and fourth place to the checkered flag.
Further back, the No. 48 Ally Cadillac racing machine, driven by Jimmie Johnson, Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Rockenfeller, and Jose Maria Lopez finished in 11th place overall and fifth in the DPi class. The No. 48 DPi-V.R suffered an incident just after 2 a.m. with Johnson behind the wheel. A tire puncture sent Johnson for a spin, resulting in a collision with the No. 3 LMP3 car followed by a second impact with the No. 15 Mercedes. Lengthy repairs were needed to address significant damage to suspension components in the right rear, effectively ending the No. 48’s bid for the race win.
The 2022 IMSA season continues on March 16th, 2022, at the Mobil 1 24 Hours of Sebring.
