Cadillac Lyriq To Feature Epic Games Unreal Engine Graphics

The upcoming Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac’s first ever all-electric vehicle, will feature infotainment graphics created using the Unreal Engine software developed by Epic Games.

The announcement was made by Candice Willett, Advanced Lead Creative Designer at Cadillac, on a video entitled Inflection Point: Putting Everybody in an EV, which has been uploaded to the newly launched GMExhibitZero.com website.

“While we’ve announced that the GMC Hummer EV will leverage Epic Games’ Unreal Engine used to make Fortnite, we can announce that we will also be using the technology in the Cadillac Lyriq to bring display information to life in engaging 3D perspective,” Willett explained.

“That layering of technology continues into the dual-plane augmented reality heads-up display that incorporates navigation directly into your field of view, and – combined with our next-generation Super Cruise driver assistant technology – helps provide confidence and control.”

Epic Games developed the first version of Unreal Engine for the 1998 first-person shooter game Unreal. The Fortnite game runs on Unreal Engine 4, which was launched in 2014. Unreal Engine 5 is scheduled for release in late 2021.

The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will be based on the EV-specific BEV3 platform and use Ultium battery technology. It will be manufactured at the Spring Hill Plant in Tennessee, and will go on sale in the first quarter of 2022, nine months ahead of the original schedule. It will be the first of six Cadillac EVs to go on sale before the end of 2025, the others being the Optiq and Symboliq crossovers, the full-size Celestiq luxury sedan, an electric version of the fifth-generation Escalade and a mixture of a sedan and a crossover coupe known so far only as the “low-roof” EV.
