2021 Cadillac Escalade Recalled Over Safety Telltale Light Issue

Cadillac parent company, General Motors, has issued a noncompliance recall for certain 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models due to a possible issue regarding the visibility of safety telltale lights during daytime.

The problem: on affected Cadillac Escalade vehicles, the front passenger seat belt and airbag status telltale lights located in the overhead console may be set to night mode in certain conditions. The problem may arise when the vehicle is started using remote start, or when it is turned off and then restarted after approximately ten minutes without the door being opened.

The hazards: if night mode is active, the telltale lights shine less brightly than normal and may not be visible in daylight. The driver and front passenger may therefore not be aware that the front passenger’s seat belt is unbuckled, or that their airbag is deactivated. This could increase the risk of passenger injury in a crash or a high-speed braking event.

The fix: Cadillac dealers will inspect and, if necessary, reprogram the Body Control Module which controls the brightness of the telltale lights. This work is expected to take a total of around 45 minutes, and will be done free of charge.

Affected component: Body Control Module.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV

Amount of vehicles affected: 3,203 vehicles.

Next steps: Cadillac will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their preferred dealer. The recall is expected to begin February 1st, 2021. Owners can visit my.gm.com/recalls or nhtsa.gov/recalls and type in their VIN to check if their vehicle is affected.

  1. May Cadillac please give their passenger cars designs a touch of American feel and stop being European copycat. The reason that Escalade and Corvette are doing well is that they have a touch of American design, they are not trying to be European.
