2022 Cadillac XT4 Refresh Delayed To 2023 Model Year

The Cadillac XT4 launched for the 2019 model year, giving the luxury automaker its first-ever entry into the rapidly-growing C-segment luxury crossover segment. Since then, the XT4 has established a solid position in the segment as it contends with well-established rivals from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus and Acura, while also fending off new entries from Volvo and Lincoln, plus secondary rivals from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which now field two models in the same segment. Cadillac was initially planning to update the XT4 for the 2022 model year, but the Cadillac XT4 refresh has now been delayed by one model year due to setbacks related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cadillac XT4 refresh, now expected for the 2023 model year, is expected to deliver styling updates and interior enhancements, along with improvements to in-vehicle technology. The SuperCruise semi-autonomous system should is also expected to make its way to the updated CUV.

The XT4 is not the only future Cadillac model to be impacted by the virus. The upcoming ultra-high-performance versions of  the CT4 and CT5 sedans, the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing, have also been delayed by roughly six months, which might punt the models by one model year.

Cadillac and its parent firm, General Motors Company, seem to be prioritizing all-new and redesigned models over refreshes, colloquially (though somewhat incorrectly) referred to as “facelifts”. That’s because, for the new models, most of the development, validation as well as sourcing and assembly line work has been completed and paid for, which is not the case for many refreshes, which have yet to complete development and validation. In addition, all-new models represent the best return on investment, which is desperately needed at a time when sales are down and losses are piling up. The good news is that other refreshes within the product portfolios of Cadillac and its parent company, have been delayed, but none have been cancelled outright, at least for now.

Meanwhile, the upcoming bevy of Cadillac EV models are on track, and none have been postponed, delayed or cancelled as of this writing. The only exception to that is the postponement of a reveal event of the Cadillac Lyriq concept car.

Cadillac and its parent lost about two months of production for vehicles that are currently on sale as a result of the COVID-19 virus. Most plants in North America closed mid-March to protect workers from the virus, and facilities started to reopen on May 18th.

While we await the now-delayed Cadillac XT4 refresh, we can at least look forward to the changes in store for the 2021 model year, which – as exclusively reported by Cadillac Society – should include the addition of Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the availability of red brake calipers as an option, new exterior colors, and a few other minor changes and updates.
