2020 Cadillac XT6 Misses Out On IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, however it missed out on the coveted Top Safety Pick+ distinction due to its headlights.

The XT6 received the highest-possible IIHS rating of Good in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also received a Good rating in the Institute’s newest crash procedure – the passenger side small overlap front test. Only XT6 models built after October 2019 qualify for the Good rating in the passenger side small overlap front test, however, as Cadillac made changes to the three-row crossover’s side curtain airbags that provide better occupant protection.

The IIHS gave the XT6’s standard front crash prevention system its highest possible rating of Superior, while the optional Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking system, part of the optional Driver Assist Package, also received a rating of Superior. The IIHS says both front crash prevention systems prevented collisions in its 12 and 25 mph tests. The Driver Assist Package is a $1,300 option on the 2020 Cadillac XT6.

Results like this meet the requirements for the Top Safety Pick+ rating, however the XT6’s headlights only received a rating of Acceptable. To qualify for Top Safety Pick+, the headlights must receive a rating of Good. The institute said that the XT6’s low beams caused some glare for oncoming traffic and found that the high beam visibility on the left side of the car was only “fair.” If it was given headlights that produce less glare for oncoming traffic and with stronger high beam illumination, the XT6 could theoretically become a Top Safety Pick+.

The only crossover to receive the Top Safety Pick+ distinction in the mid-size luxury crossover segment is the Mercedes-Benz GLE. The Cadillac XT6 joins the Infiniti QX60, Lexus RX and Volvo XC90 in the Top Safety Pick winner’s circle.
