Specifics about the upcoming Cadillac Celestiq have been hazy at best, but the luxury marque has recently revealed a few key details about its upcoming flagship electric sedan. Specifically, Cadillac and its parent company, General Motors, have revealed that the Celestiq will be hand-built at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.
The Cadillac Celestiq will be the first production vehicle to be built at the facility, which has been the automaker’s engineering and design hub since 1956. To make sure everything is up to speed and ready to assemble the large luxury sedan, the Global Technical Center will receive an investment totaling $81 million, which will go toward purchasing and installing necessary equipment to hand-build the Celestiq.
“As Cadillac’s future flagship sedan, Celestiq signifies a new, resurgent era for the brand,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM, in a press release. “Each one will be hand-built by an amazing team of craftspeople on our historic Technical Center campus, and today’s investment announcement emphasizes our commitment to delivering a world-class Cadillac with nothing but the best in craftsmanship, design, engineering and technology.”
The Celestiq will feature a wide variety of 3D printed parts – over 100, the most of any vehicle built by Cadillac or GM. This includes both structural and cosmetic parts, which will be made of polymers and metal.
The Cadillac Celestiq will be hand-built in extremely small numbers to allow its builders to focus on every last minute detail. In fact, this attention to detail could mean that every Celestiq built is unique, as customers will be able to customize every aspect of the luxury electric sedan. For example, if they wish to have interior trim made of a specific wood from their front yard, they will have the ability to do so, as Cadillac Society was first to report.
Cadillac recently a series of teaser images ahead of the official debut of the Celestiq show car, which the luxury marque says to expect in late July.
