Last weekend, Cadillac racing dominated the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar series race at Long Beach, bringing home an impressive 1-2-3 finish. The triple-podium result helped Cadillac extend its points lead in the championship ahead of second-place rival, Acura.
The No. 31 Cadillac DPi-V.R, fielded by Action Express Racing and piloted by Brazilian drivers Pipo Derani and Felipe Nasr, won the race in a dominant fashion. The No. 31 was followed by Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 01 Cadillac, driven by Kevin Magnussen and Renger van der Zande in second place, and the No. 5 Cadillac of Loic Duval and Tristan Vautier in third.
The No. 10 WTR Acura ARX-05, driven by Ricky Taylor and Felipe Albuquerque, finished fourth after the Cadillac top three sweep. Fifth place was captured by the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P with Oliver Jarvis and Harry Ticknell behind the wheel. Acura’s second car, the No. 60 MSR Acura ARX, ran off the pace for most of the day before sustaining considerable rear end damage from contact with a GTLM car, forcing retirement from the race.
There’s only one race remaining in the DPi class this season, meaning the performance of Cadillac Racing on the track and in the pit lanes will be absolutely critical for securing the championship trophy. Currently, Cadillac is scored first in the DPi manufacturer’s standings by a thin margin, with a total of 3,311 points over second-place Acura’s 3,223 points and 3,030 points for third-place Mazda. A challenging ten-hour race at Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta is all that stands between these manufacturers and a championship title.
Despite leading the DPi manufacturer points, Cadillac’s duo of Derani and Nasr are scored in the runner-up position in driver standings behind Acura’s Taylor and Albuquerque. However, it will all come down to Road Atlanta, as the pair with a better finish than the other is practically guaranteed to take the driver’s championship title as well.
The 10-hour-long championship-deciding race takes place on Saturday, November 13th, 2021, with the green flag scheduled to drop at 10:10 a.m. ET.
