Cadillac XT5 sales increased 14 percent to 17,000 units in China during the second quarter 2018. No further sales information is available about the XT5 in China.
The XT5’s second quarter 2018 sales performance enables the model to remain in second place in its competitive set in terms of sales volume in the United States, a total of 8,211 units behind the Lexus RX. The XT5 did, however, outsell the Acura MDX and Lincoln MKX. The MDX is getting a few updates for the 2019 model year, including a sportier MDX A-Spec model, while the MKX will be relaunched as the Lincoln Nautilus for the 2019 model year, with a few additional updates and changes.
In addition, the 4.62 percent sales growth of the Lexus RX outpaced the 4.3 percent growth of the XT5. Both models, however, outperformed the segment average of 0.95 percent sales growth during the quarter.
We posit that the XT5 continues to sell well and will continue to do so due to a competitive product offering as well as the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types, such as sedans.
However, the fact that the RX continues to outsell the XT5 by a wide margin should keep Cadillac executives up at night, not because the XT5 sales aren’t doing well, but rather because it can perform much better and take more sales from Lexus. We attribute the ongoing sales lead of the Lexus RX to a strong market following and reputation of the RX model, as well as a stronger of the Lexus brand when compared to Cadillac.
