Cadillac CTS Sales - Q2 2018 - South Korea

In South Korea, Cadillac CTS deliveries totaled 37 units in Q2 2018, a decrease of about 62 percent compared to 98 units sold in Q2 2017.

In the first six months of the year, CTS sales decreased about 50 percent to 79 units. Cadillac parent firm, General Motors Company, went through a very large and public restructuring in the South Korea during the first quarter of this year. The restructuring was mostly associated with GM's Chevrolet brand, and the automaker was rumored to leave the market outright if it was unable to reach a deal with local constituencies. As such, we believe that the reason for the steep decline in CTS sales in South Korea is consumer confience uncertainty following the restructuring.

The Cadillac Society Take

The CTS’ second quarter 2018 sales performance puts the model in fifth place in its competitive set in terms of sales volume in the United States.

The midsize sedan was outsold by the BMW 5/6 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class (which includes the CLS-Class), Audi A6/A7 family, and the Volvo S90/V90 range. Notably, the offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz accounted for a combined 26,061 deliveries, or just over 70 percent of the entire segment’s sales volume.

Even so, the CTS managed to outsell the Lexus GS, Genesis G80, Infiniti Q70, and Acura RLX. Despite its mid-segment finish, the CTS’ 2.6 percent growth in sales volume outperformed the segment’s 8.4 percent average decline in sales volume.

The CTS is coming to the end of the lifecycle. Cadillac has yet to officially announce plans to discontinue the CTS Sedan, but we have it on good authority that the vehicle will be phased out after the 2019 model year. The CTS, along with the ATS range, will be jointly replaced in calendar year 2019 with the 2020 Cadillac CT5 – a model that will slot between the ATS and CTS in terms of size and price.
