The Cadillac Society Take

The ATS’ second quarter 2018 sales performance puts the model in seventh place in its competitive set in terms of sales volume in the United States.

The compact sedan and coupe range was outsold by the BMW 3/4 Series, Audi A4/A5 family, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Infiniti Q50/Q60, Acura TLX and the Lexus IS/RC. Notably, the offerings from, BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz accounted for a combined 53,206 deliveries, or 60 percent of the entire segment’s sales volume.

Even so, the ATS managed to outsell the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Volvo S60/V60 range. Despite a finish that’s toward the bottom of the list, the ATS’ 2 percent decline in sales volume outperformed the segment’s 16 percent average decline in sales volume.

The ATS is coming to the end of the lifecycle, with Cadillac planning to discontinue the ATS Sedan after the 2018 model year. Though unconfirmed, we expect the ATS Coupe to not live on past the 2019 model year. Both models, along with the CTS Sedan, will be jointly replaced in 2019 with the 2020 Cadillac CT5 – a model that will slot between the ATS and CTS in terms of size and price.

  1. I wonder if ATS sales were helped or hurt by the discontinuation announcement.
The segment decline is shocking, especially considering the overall improvement in the economy. Did Audi have a fire sale?

    • Good points.

I think Cadillac’s confirmation to discontinue the ATS may have negatively impacted sales volume. I sure as heck wouldn’t buy one knowing that it will be end-of-lifed in a month or two. However, the overwhelming majority of potential car buyers (and potential ATS buyers) do not follow Cadillac as much as we do, and therefore are probably unaware of the plans to discontinue the ATS Sedan. So I don’t think the announcement had much of an impact.

The segment is indeed in decline, something I attribute to two specific factors:
      1. The biggest and best-selling models, the BMW 3 and 4 Series, will soon be overhauled – and there is a lot of pent-up demand (customers waiting to buy the new model)
      2. Crossovers, with some switching to a CUV based based on a vehicle in this segment (from a 3 series to an X3 or from a C-Class to a GLC-Class)

Audi had some very healthy incentives ($4,000) for current owners to trade up, and perhaps even more for non-owners.
